Max Boyce, still singing Hymns and Arias – aged 70

The answer came almost before the question had been completed. It was emphatic, and it came with the most knowing of smiles. “Yes,” said Max Boyce.

The question from his interviewer, John Inverdale, in a special programme screened last week to celebrate the 70th birthday of Boyce, the famous Welsh folk singer and comedian, had been: “Would you have swapped everything you have had and everything you have done for one Welsh cap?”

It was a reminder to anyone who has played international sport of how lucky they are or were.

“What position?” Inverdale inquired further.
